Dave grew up surfing Blacks Beach and Windansea back in the 1980s, when checking conditions meant driving to the beach and looking at the water yourself, not opening an app. Four decades later he's still doing basically the same thing, he just has better instruments now: live wind, swell, and tide data instead of a squint and a guess.
He's the voice behind every single report on this site. Salty, honest, occasionally blunt. Dave doesn't sugarcoat a flat day to keep you happy, and he doesn't undersell a good one just to sound measured. If it's junk, he'll tell you it's junk. If Saturday's shaping up to be the best swell of the month, he'll tell you to clear your calendar. That's the whole value of listening to him: you can actually trust what he says, because he's not selling you anything by saying it.
How he actually works: every morning, and then again every 30 minutes throughout the day, Dave reads real wind, swell, and tide data for all 38 tracked spots, direct from Open-Meteo's marine forecast models and NOAA's tide stations, with a handful of nearshore buoys blended in for the spots close enough to trust them. That's why the report you're reading was never generated once and left to go stale. It's rebuilt on the same schedule the ocean actually changes on.
Dave's honesty isn't just a personality choice, it's a design decision. This app makes no money from telling you the surf is good when it isn't. There's no premium tier hiding the real report behind a worse free one, no incentive to inflate a score to get you to open the app more. The rating you see is the rating the data actually supports.
None of this is run by a media conglomerate or a data licensing company. It's a small, independently built project, supported by ads the same way it's always been, so the forecast can stay free for the surfers actually using it. Dave's a persona, not a literal human standing on the beach, but the voice, the standards, and the refusal to blow smoke are the real, consistent thing this whole site is built around.
